A shock absorber, together with the coil spring, forms the final link between the suspension and the vehicle body. It is a vital safety component that reduces suspension spring vibrations, slows them down, and therefore limits body movement.

The 170 426 shock absorber is a twin-tube shock absorber with two oil-filled chambers: the working chamber, in which the piston and piston rod move, and the compensation chamber. The compensation chamber is located between the working cylinder and the reservoir tube, and is filled 2/3 with oil and 1/3 with air or gas. As a result, the twin-tube shock absorber has a shorter installation length than the equivalent monotube model.
